The Giving Block

Introduced crypto philanthropy to the world

Challenge

The Giving Block launched in 2018 to build an entirely new category - Crypto Philanthropy - that connects nonprofits with the growing universe of crypto investors seeking to use their crypto gains as a force for good. But with most individuals unaware how to donate crypto, and most nonprofits lacking understanding on how to effectively implement crypto fundraising campaigns, The Giving Block needed to raise its voice in a range of media to educate multiple sectors on the very existence of crypto philanthropy, and the advantages it presents both to donors and nonprofits.

Approach

Spark developed a compelling narrative that leveraged The Giving Block’s expertise and network of over 1,000 nonprofits, and tied those messages into media conversations around end-of-year giving season, tax planning, and more. Spark also developed bylined articles as educational pieces, booked founders for interviews, and leveraged case studies in vertical industry sectors including education and animal welfare to land feature coverage.

Results

“Crypto Philanthropy” has now become a recognized category, with The Giving Block as the clear leader in this new sector. Through a strategic and comprehensive media relations program, Spark not only generated media placements in major crypto and philanthropy media outlets, but also elevated the conversation to mainstream Tier One media outlets. In a six month period from October 2021 - March 2022, Spark and The Giving Block secured over 1,000 stories in a broad range of media outlets and sectors, including AP, Bloomberg, CNBC, Forbes, FORTUNE, Money, Newsweek, TechCrunch, and USA Today; crypto outlets including Coindesk, Cointelegraph, The Block and Decrypt, and philanthropy-focus outlets, including Nonprofit Pro, The Chronicle of Philanthropy. and Philanthropy.com. Additionally, Spark secured speaking engagements for The Giving Block founders at major industry events including Consensus.
